Life Science background (Pharmaceutical Sciences), nutrition geek and truly passionate about exercise physiology. I have been running for almost 10 years, and have experimented with 2 different coaches that I admire and would recommend to anyone.
That said, there are still blindspots that lead me to believe there is room for more and better running coaching, especially in the space of amateur runners, who need to juggle a full time job, family (including small babies that keep you up at night), cognitive load, extra-running stress and the goal of improving running performance.
1 - Health is the basis of everything - how you eat, sleep and self-talk play a major role in how you set yourself up to improve as a runner and absorb training stimulus.
2 - Frequency is an often downplayed training variable - most ultrarunners feel inspired by the 5 or 6 hour training sessions in the mountains we see elites perform; while that and other tools might be of use, correctly using training frequency to increase volume is often downplayed.
3 - Increasing your overall load is what leads to improvements - from VO2max to your fat burning ability and your thresholds, we need to think about load; the coach comes in with the science and the art of increasing load in a fun, sustainable way.
4 - Setting season/yearly objectives is key.
5 - Diving straight into the previously laid out plan after missing a week of training is not an option. Microcycles are always interconnected.
