About Thomas

I have a great passion for ultra running. I'm proud to be part of the San Antonio Rockhoppers Trail Running Group. We are an informal group of trail runners who share the joy for trail running and racing. I started running road races in 2000, then a friend suggested I train for a marathon when I broke my nose playing basketball. I ran my first marathon in 2004 and got hooked. I ran a half dozen trail races, then tried my first 50K in 2007 - this almost completely cemented my transition from roads to trails. Since that time, I have run over 120 trail races, ultras, fat ass and virtual events.

Coaching Philosophy

My primary goal is to meet my clients where they are physically and mentally. I want the process of goal setting to start with their vision and then become a collaborative effort. Sometimes a client may have a goal race in mind that is only eight weeks out from where we start. In these cases, a training plan is modified to get them as fit and prepared as possible for their race. In addition, there is great value in training for as much specificity as possible. This means trying to train in similar terrain or for the same percentage of vertical gain / loss as you will do in your goal race. This often presents some unique challenges for flatlanders training for mountain races, but the goal is always to get as fit as possible. In the weeks leading up to a goal race, I want my clients to have a race plan in place. This includes pacing, nutrition, drop bags, and a positive, confident focus.
