About John

I live in Southern California with my wife, our two kids, two dogs, and a cat.

I began running decades ago—starting with short distances and gradually pushing farther as the thrill of endurance became impossible to resist. Over time, that curiosity led me into multisport, and I’ve since taken part in everything from local 5K fun runs to Ironman triathlons to 100‑kilometer mountain ultramarathons.

I’ve never been mistaken for an elite athlete—or even a particularly “serious” amateur—but I’ve genuinely loved every step of the journey and take pride in what I’ve accomplished along the way.

Coaching Philosophy

Humans are meant to move—outdoors, in nature, and in ways that challenge and inspire us. I’m passionate about pursuing ambitious goals and helping beginner and intermediate athletes experience the same sense of growth and fulfillment that has shaped my own journey.

Above all, I believe training and racing should be challenging, rewarding, encouraging, and supportive of your overall quality of life. The process should feel exciting. We should look forward to running—not dread it or feel obligated to do it.

Core principles I follow:
1. Start with proven, evidence‑based practices
2. Use the athlete’s ultimate goal as the guiding compass
3. Customize every program to the athlete’s individual needs, abilities, and progress
4. Build training gradually through periodization and structured training blocks
5. Maintain a systematic, thoughtful approach to every decision and workout
