Fitness has been part of my work for nearly 35 years. I have certifications and teaching/coaching experience in a variety of areas including aerobics, strength training, Pilates, and now ultrarunning. This developed alongside my 26-year career as a writer and creative writing professor. Trail Joy Coaching offers coaching in three areas–running, writing, and "rooting" (my way of saying spiritual/soulful/individual growth). I find these three areas deeply linked in my life and am well-versed in using one or a combination of any of the three in my coaching.
My reason for coaching is simple–to help others find joy through trail running ultramarathon distances. I am able to help clients of all ages, but focus on female runners ages 40+ because even as our needs and challenges as athletes shift, our ability to reach our goals does not. I spend much time in conversation with my clients before I create a program because it is vital for me to create training plans that are tailored to each person's unique needs. I want to get to know you–what motivates you, where you get stuck, how you want to grow–before I figure out the path to get you there. Often my clients tap into my other coaching areas (writing and "rooting) while training. These three areas–running, writing, and rooting–are complimentary and deepen the experiences of each.
