I didn't start as a runner. Running was part of the sport I coached for fifteen years — soccer, first with my kids' teams, then older squads, eventually an NPSL club in South Carolina. Somewhere in there I started running road races. When I found trail running, it stuck immediately: it married running to a lifetime in the mountains. Since then I've raced trails around the world, in between rock climbing, alpine climbing, and trekking. Coaching ultrarunners brings both halves together: the mountains I love, and the satisfaction of watching athletes grow into the sport they're passionate about.
I enjoy working with athletes at all stages of development. With beginners, there's a great satisfaction in introducing people to the sport you love and helping them take it as far as they want to go, while starting out on the right foot. With more advanced athletes, it's very fulfilling to help them continue to improve their results as they set their sights on loftier goals. My overall philosophy is that no matter the outcome, there is always an opportunity to learn, and as hard as it is to accept sometimes, we often do learn more from not hitting our particular goals in a race or event. In my experience, those outcomes often drive a renewed energy and commitment to put in the focused effort to achieve a better outcome the next time around. Above all, I encourage athletes to enjoy the journey, even when that can fall out of view as we push toward our goals.
