About The Contributors

Dr. Gabe Dorn, PT, DPT, OCS

Gabe Dorn received his Doctor in Physical Therapy from Washington University in St. Louis Missouri and his Bachelors in Athletic Training at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. He is board certified as an Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (OCS). He is the co-founder of Golden Endurance Physical Therapy and Performance in Golden, Colorado.

Gabe spent his undergraduate years competing in collegiate cross country and this eventually brought him to the mountains of Colorado. When he is not working you can find him in the backcountry- running and biking on single track in the summer and finding fresh powder in the winter. His first passion is running and more recently has spent his time racing and coaching mountain ultramarathons.

Dr. Sammie Lewis, PT, DPT

After several years of working in sports biomechanics as a biomedical engineer, Sammie earned her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University of Colorado in 2020. She is the co-founder of Golden Endurance Physical Therapy and Performance in Golden, CO and specializes in the rehabilitation, strength training, and coaching of runners. Along with running her business, Sammie helps teach biomechanics for the University of Colorado Physical Therapy program.

Sammie started running after finishing her collegiate soccer career at Ohio State University. She now mostly enjoys and excels at rugged and steep mountain ultras, though you may also find her biking or skiing.

Dr. Nat Collins PT, DPT, OCS

Nat Collins is the owner of Southern Colorado Movement Co-Operative in Colorado Springs. He has been treating ultrarunners in the Colorado Springs area for over a decade, with extensive experience managing injuries common to both beginners and podium finishers alike. He has worked with athletes during their successful bids to recover from injuries and return to win or podium at The Western States 100, Leadville 100, Badwater, HURT 100, Tarawera, UTMB, as well as Olympic qualifying marathoners and middle distance runners.

Nat received his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Northwestern University in Chicago, IL (2012). Prior to attending PT school, he completed Masters research in myocardial and mitochondrial dysfunction at Colorado State University. Nat is board certified as an Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (OCS) and is also certified by Kinetacore in functional dry needling (FDN).

Course Description

Injury Prevention for the Endurance Athlete is a specialization course created and designed to provide essential knowledge and skills to coaches and athletes seeking to better understand injury prevention, correctly navigating injuries, and preparing return-to-sport programming post-injury.

This course provides important and critical foundational science, covering the skeletal and muscular systems, as well as the nervous and cardiovascular systems. It establishes a comprehensive understanding of training load, proper recovery, and the basics of resistance training with considerations for injury prevention.

Common running, cycling, and swimming related injuries are covered from the perspective of incidence and prevalence, prevention, recovery, and return-to sport programming.

This course is primarily text-based but includes 47 videos (lecture and exercises demonstrations).

The completion of this course fulfills 50% of the UESCA recertification requirement!
